Age Canada Old Pension Washington, D.C. - The Sierra Club today joined the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) in calling on the Bush administration to guarantee pensions and health benefits for retired steelworkers. Heads of both organizations came together at a steelworkers rally outside the White House to protect the health and security of these retirees and their families. Their benefits are threatened by current trade treaties, which put companies with strong environmental and labor records at a disadvantage.

Funds Pension "The Sierra Club understands that polluted air from steel production affects the health of steelworkers before anyone else," said Carl Pope, the Club's Executive Director, standing with Leo Gerard, USWA President. "That's why we've worked with the steelworkers in the past to pressure the steel industry to clean up its act. We're proud to come together with them again to ensure that we protect the health and security of retired steelworkers."

A study of both retired and working people has revealed major differences in how they perceive their future lives. Workers predicted they would retire at 62 and then consider themselves 'old' ten years later. The study found retirees were more likely to have stopped work at 60 and remain active till they reached 78 years of age. "Retirees clearly don’t think of themselves as old and past it, " said Steven Folkard, head of pensions and savings policy.

Hancock John Pension Environmentalists have frequently found common ground with the USWA and other labor organizations in the recent past, on issues ranging from international trade to clean air. Last week, the Sierra Club and the Union of Concerned Scientists teamed with the steelworkers, as well as representatives of the industrial and textile trades, to release a report showing that efforts to reduce global warming pollution can boost the economy and create jobs.

A modified test applies to workers who reach the full retirement age of 65 and 6 months in 2005. In the months before they reach full retirement age, these individuals may earn up to $31, 800 without having their benefits reduced. Once they reach full retirement age, benefits are no longer subject to any retirement test.

Pension Widow "The steelworkers know that we don't have to choose between blue skies and blue collars," continued Pope, "and environmentalists understand that a promise made is a promise kept."

Investment Pension The steelworkers, through their union, for years pressured the American steel industry to be more environmentally responsible and to provide healthcare and pensions. As a result of these pressures, the steel industry has improved its social and environmental performance.

Canadian Pension Plan Current trade treaties discriminate against companies that meet high environmental standards and pay for health care and pensions. As a result of the current trade-induced crisis in the steel industry, the pensions and healthcare benefits of steel industry retirees are threatened.

Department Pension Work The Sierra Club calls on the Administration, in response to this crisis, to provide a federal guarantee for these pensions and health benefits for retirees of the steel industry.
