Age Canada Old Pension Congress has decided to spend $10 million a year over the next five years to preserve unprotected Civil War battlefields. Nearly 20 percent of the war's major battlefields have already been lost, their original landscapes obliterated by buildings, roads and parking lots, according to the Civil War Preservation Trust, a nonprofit group.

Pension Widow The money from the bill will be distributed as matching funds to state and local governments and private groups seeking to preserve battlefields that are not on federal land.

Gettysburg Pennsylvania was the site of the largest battle ever waged during the American Civil War. It was also the bloodiest single battle of the war, resulting in over 51, 000 soldiers killed, wounded, captured, or missing. Investment Pension Supporters of the bill say that visiting battlefields is the best way to learn about the Civil War.

Department Pension Work The bill was passed nearly 10 years after a Congressional advisory commission said the nation's Civil War heritage was in grave danger and recommended that Congress commit $10 million a year to saving unprotected battlefields.

Ibm Pension But historians and preservationists say Congress did little to follow the recommendations, which were issued in a 1993 report. Before passing the bill, Congress had set aside only about $19 million for preservation.

Benefit Corporation Guaranty The commission identified 384 major battlefields from the more than 10,000 battles in the war. Its report said that in addition to the 20 percent already lost, an additional 54 percent faced threats from developers.

Calculator Pension The preservation trust said money from the bill may help it save one of its top priorities: the Mullins Farm at the Chancellorsville Battlefield in Virginia, the site of Robert E. Lee's most spectacular victory.
