Delbarton School Plans To Expand

That spells trouble for any developer trying to build in areas without sewers, including the Delbarton School monks, who want to connect their proposed $100 million retirement community on their campus to a township sewage treatment plant a couple of miles away, said Julia Somers, executive director of the Great Swamp Watershed Association, which opposes the monks' plans.
Pension Widow The abbey began planning the capital campaign in 1997 and started privately raising funds in 1999, when the school started tapping alumni and parents for money. The school then began the public phase of its fund-raising initiative, hoping to reach as many people as possible who might be interested in contributing, Travers said.

Fund Pension The fund-raising coincides with the monks' attempt to build a $40 million retirement community to generate a steady funding source to help the religious order care for its aging members. Those plans include 200 apartment-style units, 40 cottages and space for 48 nursing home beds and 24 assisted-living units on 41 acres of the campus. The monks need approvals from the township and state in order to build the development.

Investment Pension The campus covers more than 380 acres in the Washington Valley section of the township. The existing facilities include two classroom buildings, a church, a dining hall, two gymnasiums, a physical fitness facility, six tennis courts and eight athletic fields, according to the school.
Canadian Pension Plan The new arts building would cost between $8 million and $10 million and allow the school to consolidate musical and drama activities that now take place in a student cafeteria, meeting rooms and other areas of the Old Main building. The new facility will offer space for art instruction, performances and exhibitions.
Department Pension Work Another $4 million to $6 million would be earmarked for an all- weather track and resuscitating existing fields. Another $7 million to $8 million would fund renovations at the Old Main, Trinity Hall and the dining hall buildings, according to the school.
Ibm Pension Some $6 million to $7 million more would be dedicated to financial aid services. Tuition runs $18,000 at the school for seventh- through 12th-graders.
Benefit Corporation Guaranty Faculty and programs would receive a $3 million to $5 million infusion of funds while an additional $8 million, if raised, would help the monks cover ongoing operating expenses.
